A short conversation with fashion design graduate and stylist, Lydia de Kock, about her creative inspiration and design process. With a style that is unique and playful, Lydia is the perfect poster girl for individuality and expression with style, from parading a quirky avocado print shirt dress to turning heads in a well fitted pair of high waist bell bottom denim jeans appropriately accessorized with bright yellow smiley face statement clutch. With a passion for sketching, and later immersing herself in the world of sewing machines and garment constructing, Lydia has always known that fashion is her destiny. “When I was a little girl, I always wore the weirdest clothes, and I loved sketching and sewing,” she says. “I just knew that nothing else is going make me happy.” FHF: Have your parents been accepting of your career? LDK: At first they were a bit skeptical, but they wanted me to follow my heart. They are very excited for what the future holds for me, and they are always supportive. FHF: What are your goals in the industry? LDK: To create designs that will make people question things, make them think a bit. I want to create garments for the eye, the body, and – most importantly – for the soul. FHF: How would you describe your own style? LDK: The first two words that come to mind are unique and comfortable. FHF: What have you found to be the most difficult aspect of studying design? LDK: Time management. We have so much work to do in such limited time. FHF: Tell us a little bit about your garment for the upcoming fashion show. LDK: It is a very intricate design – there are a lot of hidden pockets and other surprising design elements. The garment was inspired by the global refugee crisis, and is also very masculine and structured. FHF: Whose garments are you looking forward to seeing the most? LDK: All of my friends! It’s so exciting to see their design inspirations and aesthetics come to life in their garments. Be sure to follow Lydia on instagram, and her label’s account – LDK Fashion – as well! Love and light,
