With the growing trend in topics such as ‘sustainability’ and ‘conscious consumerism’, my inner tree hugger decided to delve deeper into the idea of a great greener planet and what role fashion currently plays and what role it will have to play in future. I am a firm believer in the idea of working together with the Universe to manifest things into existence, so soon enough I stumbled upon Pretoria-based ethical clothing brand, Property of Society, who I later had the delightful pleasure of working with.
When presented with the opportunity to style the garments, I was overly excited at the chance to encounter the pieces in person and play around with styling them. Of the two sets from the collection - including light brown trousers with hidden zip at the side of the legs with a matching belted crop jacket, and a chocolate brown high-waisted asymmetrical skirt with a matching badass doubly cropped jacket - I was instantly drawn to the light brown two piece (all thanks to the jackets belts and my slight aversion towards how I look in skirts). Given the fact that I felt this two piece was more my style, I felt most comfortable styling and wearing the garments and would, without a doubt, invest in this very set or one just like it. With the so-called spring weather alternating between heat waves and thunderstorms, the Falling Winter collection was created as a semi-winter range – designed to accommodate the various seasons throughout the year, allowing us to get away with wearing winter pieces in summer or spring through thoughtful styling. Made from reconstructed trench coats, the collection displays a practical example of how fashion can improve its impact on the environment through the skilful re-purposing of existing garments, and highlights the idea of extending a garment's lifecycle in order to allow the environment that produced it time to recover and replenish itself. The brand’s overall mission is to enlighten the millennial consumer on the conscious aspects of fashion, and showcase how the fashion industry and its consumers can work together to improve the environment and society. Head over to their Instagram for more information about who they are and what they believe in, as well as a peruse of their work to date.
